Status Report of a High Luminosity Muon Collider and Future Research and Development Plans

چکیده
Muon Colliders have unique technical and physics advantages and disadvantages when compared with both hadron and electron machines. They should thus be regarded as complementary. Parameters are given of 4 TeV and 0.5 TeV (c-of-m) high luminosity μμ colliders, and of a 0.5 TeV lower luminosity demonstration machine. We discuss the various systems in such muon colliders, starting from the proton accelerator needed to generate the muons and proceeding through muon cooling, acceleration and storage in a collider ring. Detector background, polarization, and nonstandard operating conditions are analyzed. Finally, we present an R & D plan to determine whether such machines are practical, and, if they are, lead to the construction of a 0.5 TeV demonstration by 2010, and to a 4 TeV collider by the year 2020.

Laser Cooling of Tev Muons * Fermilab-conf-00/162
Muon colliders are a possible future tool for the exploration of physics at the TeV scale and beyond. The current status of the developent of the muon collider concept is described in Ref. [1], which includes a description of a 3 TeV center-ofmass (COM) machine. One of the major challenges to realizing a highluminosity muon collider is to cool the diffuse bunches of muons produced in pion decay...
متن کاملDis Prospects at the Future Muon Collider Facility
We discuss prospects of deep inelastic scattering physics capabilities at the future muon collider facility. In addition to μμ collider itself, the facility provides other possibilities. Among the possibilities, we present muon-proton collider and neutrino fixed target programs at the muon collider facility. This μ − p collider program extends kinematic reach and luminosity by an order of magni...
متن کاملStatus of the Proton Driver Study at Fermilab
In order to enhance Fermilab hadron research program and to provide a proton source to a future muon storage ring or a muon collider, the study of a new high intensity proton machine called the Proton Driver is being pursued at Fermilab. It would replace the present linac and 8 GeV Booster and produce 20 times the proton intensity as the Booster. This paper gives a status report on a number of ...
متن کاملATLAS Upgrade for the Super LHC Meeting the challenges of a ten-fold increase in collisions
With the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) about to start collisions, plans are already advancing for an upgrade. In this super-LHC (sLHC) project, about ten times the LHC luminosity in some 8 years from now is aimed. Coping with the high instantaneous and integrated luminosity will require many changes to the ATLAS detector. The designs are developing rapidly for an all-new inner-tracker, big change...
متن کاملMuon Collider Overview: Progress and Future Plans
Besides continued work on the parameters of a 3-4 and 0.5 TeV center of mass (CoM) collider, many studies are now concentrating on a machine near 100 GeV (CoM) that could be a factory for the s-channel production of Higgs particles. We mention the research on the various components in such muon colliders, starting from the proton accelerator needed to generate pions from a heavy-Z target and pr...
